A note on religion

25 March 2025

In life, I chose Buddhist philosophy as my guide. Not Buddhism itself – just a selection of its core philosophies and meditative practices. If you chose Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Judaism, or something else, or nothing, I respect your choice, and hope it brings you joy and solace.

I was raised a Christian. I attended Christian schools. Some ask what has happened to my faith, especially now that I am nearing death. Good question. The answer’s simple: I decided Christianity wasn’t for me by about the age of fourteen, and remain very much at ease with this viewpoint. I don’t need my beliefs changed, I don’t need salvation. I’m happy as I am.

If pressed to compare my experience of Christianity with Buddhism, I would say this.

Where Christianity says there’s no proof, you must believe and have faith, Buddhism says don’t have faith, explore and test the Buddha’s teachings for yourself. Apply what proves true for you.

Where Christianity says you were born with original sin, you are inherently evil, Buddhism says you are fundamentally neutral, you belong, just as you are.

Where Christianity says you will face judgement for your actions, Buddhism says don’t fear judgement, that’s all in the mind, live respectfully and rejoice in your days.

Where Christianity promises peace in a potential afterlife, Buddhism focuses on experiencing peace and freedom now, while you’re alive.

That’s my take. Your views may differ. And that’s ok.
